Preparing the interior

Painted down below

In some ways this is the worst stage as there was all the rusty iron work and dusty gravel ballast to chip off and get out. Having done 2/3 of the barge we hired some local chaps to clean out and paint the insides. This took 3 months of visits during the hottest summer for many years. They really suffered in the heat but eventually they used up our odds and sods of paint to create a nice clean glossy interior.

The chipped and wire brushed iron/steel was treated with Vactan which converts the rust into an inert black substance and acts like a primer for 3 coats of marine glosses and bilge paint.
