January 2006, Open air cruise to Knottingley

It took 2 weeks to remove 3 tons of rotten roof and get the barge down to a level that would go under the bridges. We set off on a cold January day with some boat neighbours as crew. We got only 5 miles before the engine overheated, pushing steam out of the outflow, due to mud getting into the raw water pump. It took a while to dis-mantle the raw water system and clean it so we stayed the night just past Rawclift bridge and then continued on the next day. It was great then to be cruising between farm land and under busy roads and motorways. GPS told us that our top cruising speed was 5 knts but the 60 year old Gardner never missed a beat.
