2007 First cruise

Lorna helms

Getting Waterdog out of her corner berth in the marina is always difficult because of shallows behind our berth and other boats to avoid damaging, so it's a relief when we can set off on the canal. Lorna at the wheel.

Rix Owl

A stop at Rawcliffe Bridge for first barbecue in a nice sunset; the canal still busy with commercial traffic, 'Rix Owl' a tanker barge.

The wheelhouse is still fairly new to us so we hadn't taken it down before. There's also a lot of it to store on deck when it's down so we were prepared with cheap lilos to cushion it. We set to and, suprisingly, within an hour we had it fully dismantled and laying on our coaming.

Roof panels were first, which turned out to be heavier than expected, but they were all removed and stored infront of the wheelhouse.

The sides have to be un-clipped in the correct order and stored flat on the coaming. The front and back are larger sections and just lay down onto the locker lids, again with airbeds to cushion them.

Door tops and side panels all came off with no problems. Double glazed for warmth but not too much trouble to lift as the sections were kept fairly small. The hinges just slide off in one direction.

Door tops, sides and front laid down.As long as there are 2 or more sections clipped together they are self supporting. The main problem seemed to be storing all the bits!

We arranged all the pieces to fit the space available but realised that when we have a skylight infront of the wheelhouse as well w will have to rethink. We'll have to make cradles to hold all the pieces or we'll have to leave them behind!

Roof down

Fully dismantled it makes 1m difference to the height of the barge (air draught) and she looks like a long sleek stealth boat.

Roof down

Quite a different look!

Now we were ready for the 10ft air draught that was quoted for the section of canal from Rotherham to New Junction. It might actually be more clearance but having waited so long for a decent wheelhouse and loving the result so much, we couldn't risk ripping it off with a low bridge. Ok, now we can set off ......
